The advantages of pruning

Pruning is a technique consisting in cutting certain branches of a tree to make it stronger, to lighten its upper part or to shape it. This technique can be used at different times during its growth, depending on the purpose or tree species. In general, however, it is recommended to prune a tree when it is in dormant season, in early spring, when it has not yet started its annual growth.

When carried out by a certified arborist, pruning can bring many benefits for the growth and health of trees.

Maintaining the shape of the tree

It is possible to increase a tree's wind resistance by pruning the branches so that only the strongest ones remain, while being well distributed and spaced around the trunk. It is best to do pruning over a long period of time and avoid doing it all at once, so that the tree grows tall and does not become stunted.

Maintaining the health of the tree

In the event that branches are weakened due to the presence of harmful insects or diseases, pruning may be an option to consider to maintain the tree in good health. For an aging tree, pruning the upper part of the crown makes it easier to transport nutrients from the roots to the leaves at the ends of the tree. Finally, during the growth of a tree, it can happen that branches compete within its ramage. Pruning can be a solution to prevent branches from weakening due to lack of light or space.

Safety and security

Last but not least, pruning can be used for safety reasons. Branches may weaken due to weather, age or disease. As a consequence, they can be a danger to passers-by, property, vehicles, structures or surrounding buildings. Pruning therefore becomes a technique of choice to mitigate these risks while avoiding felling the tree.
